Why Steel Stocks Are Gaining Traction in Auto and Defense Manufacturing?

Steel is the backbone of industrial growth in India. From the cars we drive to the defense equipment protecting the nation, steel’s importance is undeniable. Steel company stocks have been on the rise in recent years. It is important to understand the reasons behind this trend to get valuable insights for investing purposes.

If you’re someone who wants to invest in steel stocks, this article is for you. We will explore the increasing importance of steel in auto and defense manufacturing to help you make the right investment decisions. Let’s get started!

The Auto Industry’s Accelerated Demand for Steel

The automotive sector in India is experiencing an extremely rapid expansion. In the fiscal year 2023-24, domestic finished steel consumption reached 136.291 million tonnes, up from 100.171 million tonnes in 2019-20. This indicates a strong domestic demand for steel, with a growth rate of 13.7% over the previous year.

The auto industry is playing an important role in boosting the demand for steel in India. This is mainly due to increased vehicle production, where steel plays a vital role in manufacturing car bodies, engines, and various components.

Steel is a very popular material used in the automotive sector, and it contributes to around 65% of the raw materials used in manufacturing Indian vehicles. So, as the demand for vehicles rises, so does the need for steel.

Defense Sector’s Growing Reliance on Steel

India’s defense sector is also undergoing significant modernization. The government is pushing for self-reliance in defense manufacturing and that has led to increased production of tanks, ships, and aircraft, all of which require substantial amounts of steel.

This initiative taken by the Indian government is not only strengthening national security but also boosting demand for domestic steel. As per reports, the steel industry in India is expected to grow by 23 million tonnes between fiscal year 2023-24 and 2026-27.

Government Initiatives Backing the Steel Industry

The Indian government is actively supporting steel production by implementing several policies to support the steel sector. For example,  The New Steel Policy aims to increase per capita steel consumption to 160 kg by 2030-31.

Additionally, the Production-linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel has gained investments worth ₹27,106 crores with the production of 7.90 million tonnes of specialty steel and generating direct employment for around 14,760 individuals. And now, the government has also launched PLI scheme 1.1 with some changes.

These initiatives are designed to boost production and encourage the use of domestically produced steel in various industries, benefiting companies and boosting their steel stocks value.

Investment Opportunities in Leading Steel Companies

For investors, the current scenario comes with exciting opportunities. Companies like Tata Steel have reported strong domestic sales, with a consolidated net profit of 3.27 billion rupees for the quarter ending December 31, 2024, driven by an 8.4% increase in the sales volume of steel in India. Tata Steel share price is currently running at around ₹130+

Similarly, JSW Steel, in collaboration with South Korea’s POSCO, is investing ₹650 billion (US$7.73 billion) to establish a steel plant in Odisha, aiming to meet the rising steel demand in India’s growing economy.

Investing in companies with future project pipelines could prove to be a good move as the current trends in the auto and defense sectors suggest that the demand for steel stocks is going to rise.

Conclusion

The increasing demand from the automobile and defense sectors is driving up steel stocks. With strong government support and industry expansion, steel companies are well-positioned for growth. If you want to invest in steel stocks, you should keep an eye on leading steel manufacturers to make well-informed decisions. Happy investing!
